The study of the paintings that flourished in Punjab has remained a subject of unconcern to historians and art critics. References to it by scholars of art, whenever made, were mere courtesies. Barring sporadic attempts no serious effort has been made either to survey or to document or to comment on the paintings of the region. This is the first full-length study to be made of a prominent aspect of the paintings of Punjab, the wall-paintings. The study is based on extensive field work- almost village to village survey across Punjab and Haryana-and as thorough a study of written records as well.
