 The book gives a vivid account of the events that led to the downfall of the the Sikh Empire that Maharaja Ranjit Singh had established. From being a pettly chieftain around the pricipality of Gujranwala, Ranjit Singh rose to become a monarch of a kingdom sprawled over an area of about 2 lakh square miles yielding an annual revenue of over 3 crores of rupees. The funeral of Maharaja Ranjit Singh was hardly over when the Princes started fighting for the throne. Court intrigues, conspiracies, assassinations became the order of the day, and the British Empire ultimately was the victor.
